“Give it to _________. They always get stuff done.“
Being good at your job can attract more work.
That’s not a reason to not do good work. The Lord put us here in His image to do good work and be skilled at what we do.
But, you should definitely be mindful of “performance punishment.”
Performance punishment is something that high performing employees may face as a result of their productivity and reputation for getting things done.
This can include being given more work or responsibilities that aren’t necessarily in their job description, being expected to work longer hours, or being subjected to additional scrutiny when they take PTO or sick days.
I read in a book once (can’t remember the book) that we should never punish our top performers, but use them to help grow the team to their level.
Yet, so many leaders pile the work on their most dependable and highest performing team members.
Overworking your star performers and avoiding raising your under-performers up to satisfactory is when good people leave and sub-par employees never improve.
And then you’re posting another ad to fill a position on Indeed or reaching out to your recruiter.
And you’re wondering why nothing ever catches a cadence or why your business keeps treading water.
If you need help assessing your team or helping raise the standards of non performing team members, then consider hiring a Fractional Executive.
This is in our wheelhouse.
We can help you grow the team and avoid burnout of your key performers.
